Day Trip to Maldon, Vic
January 3rd 2006

A very interesting looking house in Maldon's High Street is Vivian's
House.
This info is from the linked page above:
The land was
purchased in 1857 and the brick house and shop were constructed around 1862.
It
appears as if the unusual brickwork around the windows and door were introduced
when the building was altered to a residence in 1868.
The building was owned by
Thomas Vivian who carried out his business
in the properties to the rear of the
house.
Next door is the Anglican
Holy Trinity Church.
The original church
hall was built in Church Street in 1856 but was partly destroyed in a
storm.
This site was purchased in 1860 and the existing church, designed by D R
Drape,
was built
in 1861, it is the largest building of local stone.
The principal material is blue ragstone and has dressings of grey granite
and was constructed by stonemasons W Bowe and Sons.
The roof is of scissor trussed rafters and colonial timber,
thought to be the only one of its kind in Australia.
The handworked kneeling cushions are worked with designs to match the stained
glass windows.
The western stained glass window was made in 1864, one of the first ones made in
Victoria.
The organ was made in 1893 and fully restored in 1991.
The iron fence replaced the original picket fence some time between 1884 and
1897.
The sign on the door reads:
Enter this door
As if the floor
Within were gold,
And every wall
Of jewels untold,
As if a choir
In robes of fire
Were singing here.
Nor shout, nor rush,
But hush...
For God is here.
