This one was more tricky to put together than the Benidorm one, and the colours don't match at all, but at least you can get a bit of an idea of the view.

OK... on to the El Arca animal sanctuary down the road.
It's not a big commercialised place, it's just a chunk of land that a benevolent young man has dedicated to the welfare of maltreated wild animals. Some of his guests have been circus performers, others have been illegal pets, and still others are creatures who have been brought in, injured or sick, and he's nursed them back to health, but for various reasons, they can't be released back into the wild. I only just found the website, so PLEASE click on the link and take a look. They've published the histories of some of the animals, as well as having some excellent photos on the site.
There's even one of him with the panther.

Beryl and Derek had been here previously, when it was pretty much free range and the animals were all in easy view, behind single fencing that was designed more to keep humans to the pathways than to restrict the animals. But a few months ago, a rather silly lady stuck her hand through the fencing to pat a lioness... and promptly lost an arm ! There was debate over whether to close the sanctuary, but it's been allowed to remain open on the proviso that all the dangerous animals are kept behind double fencing, and warning signs had to be erected, stating the obvious... wild animals bite !

Just inside the entrance to the sanctuary is a house, and on a table as you look in the back door,  there was a large cage containing a 7 week old panther cub and a young racoon, playing happily together. I wish I had taken a photo of them, but I didn't know if it was OK to take one in the house.

Heading on down the path, there was a large wicker basket, the type you could use for a toy hamper. Derek lifted the lid.......

These racoons didn't seem too bothered by the heat...

... neither did this armadillo...

... but this one was out for the count !

Lion Bites Off Arm of
British Tourist

A British tourist is in a serious condition in a Spanish hospital today after having her arm ripped off by a lion at a wildlife park.

The 54-year-old woman left her tour group and scaled a three metre high barrier before putting her fingers through a space in the fence to try to stroke the big cat.

But as she reached out the lioness, called Marta, jumped at her. According to the manager of El Arca Sanctuary for Wild Animals near Alicante the lioness grabbed the woman's fingers before she could pull them away.

The cat then tugged with such force that the woman's arm was pulled through the gap. Half the limb was bitten off in the attack. Surgeons amputated what was left of the arm from just above the elbow.

According to a spokesman at the hospital in Vila Joiosa, the woman, who has not been named, is in a serious but not life threatening condition.

Serafin Domenech, founder of the El Arca Sanctuary which is a refuge for sick animals and those treated badly in Spain's zoos and circuses, described the woman's actions as "extremely foolish" and "going against all the sanctuary's security recommendations".

He said: "She split from her tour group and climbed the fence with the clear intention of stroking the lioness."

"When the animal jumped at her and grabbed her hand she tried to pull it back, but it was too late.

"The lioness had pulled enough of the arm through to be able to bite off about half of it."

A spokesman for Spain's police said the force was launching an investigation.

inviting people to put their hands in the cat's mouth !!!

ANNE'S ARM BITTEN OFF AS SHE PUTS IT IN LION'S MOUTH

Jan 31 2003
Tourists scream as animal lover has limb torn off at sanctuary

A BRITISH tourist's arm was bitten off by a lion after she put her hand inside its mouth during a visit to a zoo.

Anne Richards, 54, was in a serious condition in hospital after her right arm was chewed off by the lioness called Marta.

Grandmother Anne was on a week's holiday in Benidorm when she went on the excursion to an animal sanctuary that cares for abused animals.

Her sister, Carol Jones, who was also on the day-trip, has told family that Anne and other tourists were encouraged to stroke the animal and put their hands in its mouth.

But, as animal lover Anne, from Neath, south Wales, put her hand into the lioness's open mouth, it suddenly snapped and closed its jaws around her arm.

Holidaymakers screamed in horror as 4ft 9in Anne collapsed to the floor with her arm torn off below the elbow.

She was flown to hospital in Villajoyosa, where she underwent emergency surgery.

Her husband, Jimmy, and the couple's two children, Amanda, 30, and Michael, 33, were due to fly out to be at her bedside.

Sanctuary owner Serafin Domenech claims Anne climbed a three-metre high barrier to stick her fingers into the lions' compound. But hospital porter Jimmy, 60, blasted the claims as "totally ridiculous".

He said: "There is no way my wife could have climbed a three-metre fence.

"She suffers from osteoporosis and also from angina.

"My sister-in-law phoned me from Spain and said Anne was invited to put her hand into the lion's mouth by sanctuary staff.

"She decided to try it and the lioness grabbed her arm and started biting it."

Jimmy said his wife was an animal lover and a trip to a safari park would have been her ideal day out.

He paid £400 for the Spanish break for his wife and her sister as a late Christmas present.

The pair flew out a week ago and went on the day-trip on the last day of their holiday.

Jimmy said: "I got a lump sum from my employers when I turned 60 and I used some of it to give my wife a holiday treat.

"But now I wish I hadn't after this awful thing happened to her."

Daughter Amanda added: "My mother would not dream of climbing a fence and sticking her finger through.

"She is only 4ft 9ins tall and has been frightened of heights all her life. She can't even face using a lift."

The couple's four grandchildren Jamie, nine, Jodie, six, Lewys, four, and Jack, three, have been told of the tragedy.

Anne's sister, Margaret Higgins, 53, also of Neath, called for the animal sanctuary to be shut down.

She said: "It's ridiculous that they invite people that close to the lions.

"All wild animals can turn. But you don't take that kind of risk with a lion do you?

"We're just grateful that Anne has survived. It could have been so much worse."

The attack was being investigated by Spanish authorities yesterday but park owner Serafin Domenech was blaming Mrs Richards for causing the attack.

In an interview on Spanish TV, he said: "The lady climbed up the three- metre high barrier. She climbed to the top and stuck her fingers inside the enclosure."

The El Arca sanctuary near Alicante, in south-east Spain, houses seven adult lions and 12 cubs and specialises in the rescue, treatment and protection of abused animals.
