Dover castle at night. I had a
bit of bother getting this shot from the balcony of our hotel, because there was
chicken wire surrounding the whole balcony... placed there in an effort to
prevent the birds from entering the rooms ! Apparently they'd become as much of
a nuisance as the pigeons in Trafalgar Square.
Just so we could say we'd done
it...
We decided to take a hovercat
trip from Dover to Calais. It takes less
than an hour each way, and only costs 12 pounds a head, so on the Wednesday
morning, off we went....
We arrived in Calais, took the bus from the
dock to the town centre and found a nice little market to browse. It was almost
time for a fruit fix, so I bought an apple and a pear, and then we headed for
the main shopping centre.
On the way, we passed the Watch Tower ... looks like a
birdie dropped something on the info board !
As we walked, it started to
rain... at first just a fine drizzle, but becoming heavier.... and heavier....
and there was absolutely nowhere to shelter, except for one tiny leaky canvas
awning outside a little shop.
We stood under there for about
fifteen minutes, waiting for the rain to ease off, but it had set in with a
vengeance. Finding a good side in all this, at least I was able to wash my fruit
before I ate it. The locals looked at me as if I was a mad Englishwoman, holding
my apple and pear in outstretched hands in the relentless rain !
Bill decided an hour's worth of
Calais was enough, and we made a dash for the bus stop to head back to the dock.
I was completely drenched ! Fortunately I'd taken a jacket, so I was able
to change out of my wet shirt before boarding the cat. My pants were a
lightweight cotton so they dried pretty quickly. As you can see, the whole
ordeal was just too much for Bill....
