The Red Lion... a
quaint thatch-roofed pub close by looked very inviting,
but we needed
to be in Dover by dinner time, so...

... we continued on our merry way !

We had planned one
more stop on the way,
at Battle
Abbey, scene of the
Battle
of Hastings in 1066...

... but by the time we got there, we were too late to go in.
Onward
to Dover...

... with its famous white
cliffs.
(Those are seagulls over them, not bluebirds !)
Cousin
Ian (second last photo) and his wife Jean had made dinner reservations
for the five of us, so we didn't even have time to check in at our
hotel and clean
up before heading to their house. Hope we weren't too smelly and sweaty,
considering all we'd done on that hottest of hot English July days !
Our waiter took this photo with Maggi's camera.
Our visit with Ian and
Jean was all too short, and as we said our goodbyes,
we vowed to spend longer with them next time.
Of all the times we got lost or took wrong exits on roundabouts during the
trip,
probably the most frustrating was this night, trying to find our
accommodation.
The directions and map on the website are confusing enough, but when
you're
coming from the opposite direction and trying to navigate multiple
gigantic
roundabouts in reverse, it's a nightmare ! To add to the confusion, the
signposts
at the exits only indicated "Six Hotels" or "Three
Hotels", but didn't state
which ones ! We must have driven around half a dozen roundabouts at least
three times each before we finally spied the Travelodge sign !
