Minerva's Head

Mosaics from Aquae Sulis.
The two mosaic floors on display came from
buildings in Aquae Sulis. They decorated the
finer rooms. Geometric patterns were popular
with mosaic craftsmen, different coloured
stones, tile and sometimes glass were shaped
to create designs.

The mosaic on the floor below includes popular
patterns like the 'Greek key' design with inset
squares and the twisted rope-like strands of a
guilloche border.

The photographs show other mosaics found in
Bath that are still preserved in their original
positions.

Sea beasts mosaic.
Fragment of a marine mosaic showing a dolphin and sea horses, probably 4th century AD.
The mosaic was found during excavations near Saw Close, Bath in 1859.
