Back on the coach, we complete the circuit of the
Rock.
The walk around the base is 9.4 km (about 6 miles)
but the road is a distance from the base so obviously
it's further.
Our driver stopped so we could take
photos of this hole,
which is known as the face of Mala. All the markings on
the Rock have significance in the dreamtime stories.
Driving on, we arrived at the climbing
point where we once again
disembarked to explore briefly and take photos.
We didn't have time to do the climb, but I wouldn't have even if we did.
The climbing track is along a sacred route which also features in the
dreamtime
and the Aboriginals ask visitors to respect it as they do themselves.
Naturally, not everyone does. 33 people have died during the climb,
most from heart problems.
In the visitors' centre, you can read the "sorry book", a collection
of hundreds of letters of apology from people who have taken pieces
of rock or shown disrespect in some other way when visiting Uluru,
and who have later been plagued with guilt and made amends.
This is as high as I go !
