The Ghan Trip

Melbourne - Darwin - Katherine - Alice Springs - Uluru - Adelaide - Melbourne

Photography is not allowed inside the centre or at certain sacred sites
around Uluru, particularly where there are rock paintings. Our driver
related an incident where one of his passengers photographed
an Aboriginal woman doing her washing at the waterhole we were
about to visit, and she turned on him, attacking his camera with a stick
and screaming that he had stolen her spirit.

On foot now, a short hike to Mutitjulu Waterhole. This waterhole
is of extreme importance to the local people due to its supposed
permanence. You'll see why I said "supposed" when we get there.
It also plays a significant part in their creation stories.

In the centre of this photo you can see two climbers atop the Rock.

Our driver/guide tells us that this part of the Rock is not
to be climbed on, but since no-one is around to tell us off,
we can pose and pretend. This is the very base of Uluru,
where it emerges from the ground.

A "sorry cut", which features in Aboriginal dreamtime stories.
I found this page which relates some of the ancient tales.

Beneath the huge overhanging boulder is a cave where centuries old
rock paintings adorn the walls.
