On the bus heading back to the railway station.
During the
floods of January 1998, this bridge was under water,
to a depth of 21 metres. (About 70 feet). Who would believe it now ?
There's a very small amount of water
remaining in this side at least.
Ready to continue on the train to Alice.
There were 36 carriages as well as two
engines and the car carriers.
It takes 15 minutes and 68 doors to make your way from one end
of the train to the other.
All aboard for Alice !
It's just coffee !
In the
lounge car waiting to be called for dinner.
In July 2000, the Olympic torch travelled from Kalgoorlie
to Port Augusta on the Ghan's sister train, the Indian Pacific
on its way to Sydney. More about it
here.
A rare shot of the empty lounge. Why was it empty ? Because everyone
was in the dining car... except us. We had gone to our cabin to change
and by the time we walked back, the only two empty seats were at
opposite ends of the dining car. The crew announced our dilemma and
asked if anyone was prepared to reshuffle so we could sit together...
or even at adjacent tables, but no go ! After a few moments'
deliberation,
they gave us the choice of being served in our cabin or in the lounge.
We chose the lounge, of course.
Along with profuse apologies, we were offered complimentary drinks.
Bill chose their red wine, I had a tomato juice.
Much as he tried, he couldn't finish the whole bottle in one sitting.
He shared it with another couple somewhere between Alice Springs
and Adelaide a few days later.
